This project was a special and beloved one in the festival... Romanian photographers Iulia Scrob from Sibiu and Viorica Cernica from Deventer worked in their studios on 30 photo portraits of Dutch and Romanian people, who’s lives were influenced and/or changed through the link between Deventer and Sibiu since December 1989.

The digital exhibition "took place" on Facebook. Every day from 15th November till 15th December a photo with a short description and statement by the person portrayed was posted. The project had a large reach and tens of thousands of responses online. It also meant intensive daily contact between the two photographers, and sharing of stories and anecdotes of the people that were portrayed.

These 30 portraits are only a very small selection out of thousands of people who were involved in the partnership between the partner cities Sibiu and Deventer since 1989.

Double concert DUMItRIO & Alex Simu Quintet

Picture
Picture
"DUMItRIO with “Proverbe” and Alex Simu Quintet with “Echos of Enescu”, gave a wonderful double concert.

DUMItRIO was founded by George Dumitriu, who won more than 15 international prizes as a classical violinist and then broadened his horizons to include jazz guitar, viola, electronics and free improvisation. Their recent album Proverbe creates an enchanting Romanian ambiance. George Dumitriu sent the trio into new musical directions by incorporating elements of oral and musical Romanian folklore into their repertoire. The sublime addition of violin, viola and cello forms a new dimension to the sound of the guitar trio.

Alex Simu is an award-winning, internationally acclaimed clarinettist, saxophonist and composer. With his quintet he brought a tribute to George Enescu with Echos or Enescu. The Alex Simu Quintet performs Enescu's symphonic suites in its own unique way, in a new jazz setting. The folkloric themes of Enescu's music form the starting point of open conversations / improvisations between the musicians. The symphonies of George Enescu are rarely performed by European orchestras. "Echoes or Enescu" was a great opportunity to (re) discover these forgotten masterpieces.

When: Thursday 21st of November 2019 20:00h - 22.00h.
Moderator: Jan Henk van der Kolk.
Where: Kerkzaal van Het Penninckshuis, Brink 89, Deventer.

“New Roots” by Teodora Ionescu

Teodora Ionescu studied theatre and art in Romania and in the Netherlands. For the past nine years she has lived in Deventer, where she is very active as a teacher / visual artist / actor. Teodora shared her experiences as a 5-years old child during the Romanian revolution of 1989 in a short story. And with her performance art "Like your shadow, your roots follow you” she brought a visual story. Starting from the theme of integration, the performance is a presentation of the process she went through. About the fear of being different, not being accepted, the fear of losing your own identity, being invisible in a new society, finding the path, the acceptance.
Teodora used drawings and fragments of her artworks made during the first 3 years in The Nederlands in the movie. In retrospect she realised that she was drawing her roots.  Whether you have emigrated to follow your love, looking for work and a better life, or just curious; the step to leave your family, friends and birthplace is an emotional process. Growing new roots is another step that also involves trial and error, sadness and hope.

“The girl and the revolution” by Storiana (Oriana van der Sande)

Oriana van der Sande-Semenciuc is speaker, moderator, trainer, writer.
The Romanian revolution of December 1989. And now it's 30 years later. Oriana has been living in the Netherlands for almost as long, but she looks back at what happened then. It was 30 years ago, did she really experience that?! It almost seems like a dream. Another country. Another time. And where does Romania stand in 2019, 30 years later?

When: Friday 29th of November 20:00 – 22:00.
