Working visit and celebration 25 years partnership Sibiu-Deventer
From 1 - 6 October 2015 we celebrated 25 years of partnership and cooperation between Deventer and Sibiu (Romania).
Deventer and Sibiu have a cooperation since the fall of Ceausescu, end of December 1989. As of May 2007 an official twinning of the cities has been set in place. A few thousand families and dozens of organizations, companies and institutions either are or have been involved in various programs and projects between Sibiu and Deventer during the past twenty-five years. From emergency aid and material support in the beginning to knowledge exchange programmes between municipalities, provinces, organizations and institutions in various fields. Consider, for example, education, healthcare, welfare, disabled people care, neighbourhood development, local economical development, strengthening of local governance and exchanges in sport, art and culture. A highlight in the art and cultural area was the project “Young in Europe: Sibiu meets Deventer” in 2007 as part of the program Sibiu European Capital of Culture 2007.
On Friday the 2nd of October 2015 a networking meeting took place in Het Pakhuis in Deventer, during which a number of parties involved in the cooperation participated and presented themselves.
A Romanian delegation from Sibiu, HE Ireny Comaroschi, Romanian Ambassador in The Netherlands and Mr. Andries Heidema, Mayor of Deventer were among the participants.
The Sibiu delegation consisted of some of the people who have been there since the beginning in 1989 or have taken part in extensive collaborations throughout the years as well as young people who in the recent years have been active in bringing the collaboration between Deventer and Sibiu further. The participants have been doing this through NGOs (non-governmental organizations), the Municipality of Sibiu, local organizations or their own businesses.

On Saturday evening the 3rd of October, a festive public event was organized in the spaces of Kunstenlab in Deventer. Among the attendees were also the very first promoters on the Dutch and Romanian side from the December days of 1989: Danny Abel and Mircea Pantazopol.
After some introductory speeches by, among others, Frits Rorink, Deputy of municipality of Deventer, NetSib presented an overview of the cooperation between Sibiu and Deventer so far through a few (photo-)films.
From contemporary Sibiu there were slideshow presentations by Sebastian Marcovici (photojournalist) and Silviu Scrob (Hermannstadt Events). Romulus Cipariu created a great atmosphere singing and playing live music on cimbalom after which videoclips of the successful folk rock group DOMINO from Sibiu were screened. Also the exhibition of Romanian artist Viorica Cernica, now living and working in Deventer, got a lot of positive reviews from the visitors.
In addition to the festivities, there were local working visits and meetings with participants from Deventer and Sibiu. Among others, on topics such as the EU Leader programs 2015-2020 for rural development in Margininea Sibiului and Salland and the cultural infrastructure for young people in the city of Sibiu. The events were organized by NetSib Foundation in collaboration with the municipality of Deventer, Deventer-Romania Foundation, municipality of Sibiu, Hermannstadt Events and Kunstenlab Deventer.
