Middle- and Eastern Europe Events

Between 1993 and 2006 a lot of events focussing on Middle- and Eastern Europe took place in Deventer. An initiative group called "Eastern Europe in Eastern Netherlands" was set up it in 1993. Among them was also the Deventer-Romania Foundation and later, in 2001, the Platform for Interregional Cooperation Deventer, Overbetuwe, Sibiu and Marginimea Sibiului.

Since 2000, every two years a Middle- and Eastern Europe Fair & Conference was organized in Deventer to promote the culture and cooperation with this part of Europe. Also, subjects related to the criteria for entering the European Union were on the agenda of the conference. Within this context, fairs, art- and photo exhibitions, films and documentairies, videopresentations, concerts, lectures, dinners, seminars, workshops, debates etc. were organized. During all editions Romania in general and Sibiu in particular were involved.

In the 2002 edition Romania was the headliner of the program. A large delegation from Sibiu and Marginimea Sibiului participated to promote the city of Sibiu and surrounding rural area. Among them a.o. Mr. Constantin Morar, President of the County Council of Sibiu, Mr. Klaus Iohannis, Mayor of Sibiu, HE Iulian Buga, Ambassador of Romania in the Netherlands and HE Pieter Jan Wolthers, Ambassador of the Netherlands in Romania.

In 2004, fifteen ambassadors from Middle- and Eastern European countries joined the conference and 3000 visitors attended the fair organized in Deventer. Famous artists like Taraf de Haidouks (Romania), Ballet St. Petersburg (Russia) performed during the years.
