Young in Europe 2007 - Performances
FESTIVAL “YOUNG IN EUROPE : SIBIU MEETS DEVENTER” 11-20 AUGUST 2007
During a period of 9 days, the city of Deventer was represented in Sibiu by Dutch local, regional and national talented artists from different domains. Together with Romanian artists, they gave amazing performances in the city centre and neighbourhoods of Sibiu, on big and small stages. outdoor and indoor (see the programming scheme of our project below).
The different activities and events of our project were split up in several fields of activities:
Students debates, lectures and meetings
Students from Saxion Hogescholen in Deventer organised - together with students from Sibiu from the Students’ Association AIESEC - different activities, among which: a Socratic dinner dealing with philosophical themes, a debate on “Being young in Europe”, different meetings and discussions in order to get to know each other and learn about each others culture.
Music performances
Several very talented bands from Deventer (or with Deventer roots) performed in Sibiu on different locations: the Big Square in Sibiu; neighbourhoods of Sibiu (Hipodrom, Strand, Tiglari, Valeea Aurie, Vasile Aaron); the Promenada Mall of Sibiu; different clubs (Chill Out; Atrium; Imperium and Liquid); the Pavilion 2007 Sibiu. The bands that represented Deventer were: The Freaks (rock’n punk); Next Waste Dimension (metal-dance-industrial/VJ show); Da Floawaz (hip-hop); Think Tank (jazz) and Reality Brass Band (Antillean brass music). Next Waste Dimension also performed with Romanian metal bands, such as Darken My Grief (Sibiu) and Vespera (Cluj). The group Think Tank performed with Romanian jazz players like Alexandru Brasoveanu and Ciprian Oancea and they ensured a great atmosphere every evening in the jazz clubs in Sibiu.
We also organised classical music concerts with the professional Simeon Quartet players from Zutphen (The Netherlands) and with young Dutch and Romanian piano players. The Simeon Quartet performed the Canto Ostinato piano concert (music by Simeon ten Holt, a contemporary Dutch composer) on four grand piano’s. The same concert was also performed by two young pianists from Sibiu (from the Music and Arts Highschool in Sibiu) and four young pianists from the Netherlands (contacted by the music school De Leeuwenkuil in Deventer). Before and/or during the performance photo/film shoots were made and mixed during the performance by VJ Bart Folmer, and projected on a big screen. The VJ mix showed people and places from Deventer and Sibiu, in this way accomplishing a unique mix of images and sound.
Theatre & Dance
The professional breakdance group Ill Skill Squad, contracted by the Production House Eastern Netherlands in Deventer, gave amazing break dance performances on classical music. Moreover, they gave workshops to the local professional folk dance group, Junii Sibiului from Sibiu. At the end of the project week and during our last evening in Sibiu, the Dutch and the Romanian dancers presented a co-production of breakdance and Romanian folk dancing, which was of a great success.
African dance was also present in our programme. AMUKA from Deventer had different working sessions with children with disabilities in different institutions for disabled children in the Sibiu county. The experience was unique both for Amuka and for the staff of the institutions themselves. The music therapy for disabled children has since then been introduced in the Romanian institutions for disabled people. Besides these sessions, Amuka worked every day with 16 children aged 7 to 9 coming from the poorest neighbourhood of Sibiu, Tiglari, in preparing a dance and music performance. The performance took place on our last evening and the audience enjoyed it very much.
The Deventer theatre group Tam Tam - specialising in performances based on images, sounds and objects - gave different workshops to the local actors from the GONG Theatre Sibiu. The knowledge-exchange sessions were interactive and at the end of the project, the Dutch and Romanian actors performed together the show ”Bazar Bizar”.
Film & Phototography
In the field of cinema, typical Dutch films / documentaries for the youth provided by the FilmHuis De Keizer in Deventer were showed at the Astra Film Studio in Sibiu. Also, the film “The Black Book” by Paul Verhoeven, a Dutch film maker, was presented in the Astra Cinema of Sibiu. Besides these films and documentaries, a young Dutch filmmaker, Rowdy Pelgrim, together with a young Romanian filmmaker, Vadim Lulai, produced during the project period a documentary on the young people living in children homes in Sibiu. The institution chosen was Prichindelul Sibiu. The documentary, titled “Home” proved to be very impressive, also keeping in mind that it was the product of only five working days. The deadline was very short but with hard work and tight cooperation the two film makers came up with a wonderful result.
In the field of photography, the Dutch photographer Rob Philip organised together with the Romanian photographer Alexandru Mirutiu a photo exhibition at the Sibiu Bruckenthal Contemporary Art Gallery, entitled “The eye of the beholder”. The theme of the exhibition was at the same time daring and impressive, as the theme was men prostitution in The Netherlands. With this exhibition, the two photographers exhibited not only a piece of reality but also raised the issue of the human condition.
Art
As far as video art goes, the Dutch companies Ontwerpatelier, represented by John Patrick Nijkamp and DesignArbeid, represented by Ruben Abels, worked the entire period in the neighbourhood of Tiglari in Sibiu. They took different photographs of the people living in the neighbourhood and morphed them live on the music played by DJ Radion. Their show was entitled “Life in Tiglari” and the images were projected on a building in this neighbourhood. Of course, all the inhabitants were invited. and the show was appreciated by all those attending the performance.
Visual art was also well represented. Deventer artists Sebiha Demir, Francisca Barker, Patrick Mangnus and Bart Folmer collaborated with the Romanian artists Teodora Ionescu, Viorica Cernica, Cristina Ciuhan and Cuzina (through European House of Arts Romania). Together they worked on collaborative artworks using techniques such as graffiti, printing and acrylic painting. No print or painting was the result of one artist's signature as they all worked on all pieces at the same time, reacting on each others work. Their studio was set up in the basement of the Gong Theatre Sibiu. Their fresh new works were exhibited daily in the hall of the Gong Theatre Sibiu. After the end of the project all their paintings were exposed at the Astra Library Sibiu. These paintings were the result of a mixture of styles and visions, as all of them bare the mark of all artists, Dutch and Romanian. The cooperation between Dutch and Romanian artists took place within the C3 Art project, Connecting Cultural Capitals, which is meant to set up a network of artists in Europe.
