Young in Europe 2007 - Making Of and Organisation

In 2004, the European Commission chose Sibiu to become European Cultural Capital in 2007 together with the city of Luxemburg. Within the framework of this major event and due to the tight relations between the two cities, the mayor of Sibiu, Mr. Klaus Johannis invited us, their Deventer partners, to participate to this event and bring in a project idea. After several some months of contact exchange and different project drafts, the partners from Deventer and Sibiu agreed to organise a common interactive and innovative artistic and cultural programme. This programme was to involve both Deventer and Sibiu artists.

The international dimension of the city of Sibiu for the year 2007:
  • In 2007, the city of Sibiu intended to open to the world and present its cultural heritage and the way its multicultural richness can contribute to building an united Europe.
  • The city aspired to become a point where people and cultures of our continent meet and celebrate, a point of departure and arrival for everybody, a crossroads of the route which Europeans would take in 2007.
  • The city of Sibiu is a multicultural city itself, as Hungarian, German and Roma minorities among others cohabitate together with the Romanian majority. Moreover, Sibiu has international partner cities, such as Landshut (Germany), Rennes (France), Klagenfurt (Austria), Deventer (The Netherlands), etc. This multicultural dimension and international cooperation were to be enhanced throughout the year 2007.

Within this context, it was only logical that the Romanian and Dutch partners joined their knowledge and forces once more in order to produce a common artistic, intellectual and cultural programme. The project, which would take place in Sibiu in the period 11-20 August 2007 was meant to further consolidate this bond and also contribute to the development of the European cultural cooperation. This programme was above all meant to be innovative and diverse. It focused on the young generation and it's main purpose was to get the youth involved. Moreover, due to Romania's entry in the European Union  on January the 1st 2007, the Dutch and the Romanian partners were able to set up a new basis for a future cooperation. This time on a different level: that of equal member states within a growing European Union.
